Volumizers

While my hair is quite long, it's also very fine, meaning that when I put my hair up in a bun, it doesn't support some styles of wrap- especially ones that have lots of layers going over the top of the head, or which want some bulk to create a sense of balance.  I've experimented with layering scarves underneath, as in this style:
And I've seen an excellent tutorial for using a long scarf and tucking it underneath itself, although I haven't managed to make it work for me.  I think I put my bun too low- but that's where it feels most comfortable and natural to me.

There are also commercial padded volumizers  sold, like these (pictures courtesy of Pesky Settler), and available online as well.

And then, there's the DIY approach, for which I found an interesting tutorial here.  It looks easy, and fairly cheap.  When I get the materials together, I'm going to try this one myself.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Do you bother with this?  What are your techniques?

  1. Hello! I am a Catholic college student who covers, and I've been having the same issues! But tonight -moments ago, really- I resolved them! There are tutorials on youtube for how to make a "sock bun" that gives you a full, smooth bun and is a great size for wearing under a tichel! Here is a tutorial on how to make the bun: http://youtu.be/o_9liWtNbBg And here is one on how to wear it: http://youtu.be/hfMlMhSACCE
I hope this helps! I just tried it and it worked beautifully for me, because the socks added a little stability. I think it would hold pretty well with the layered look, and I'm going to try it out this Sunday, so we'll see. And it's CHEAP.
Anyway, I love your blog; I read it all the time and love how creative you are. Keep it up!
    God Bless You!

    1. These are great! Thank you for sharing them, and I look forward to trying them out, and reporting on the results. If you'd do the same, that would be awesome.

    2. And in my excitement about your comment, I forgot the usual niceties- it's great to meet you! I'm really glad that my blog is useful for you.

Do you wrap your hair around the sock bun, then cover, or just slide the sock bun around your own bun? From the first video, I presumed the latter, but then, I saw the second video... My hair is quite long, and I'm not sure how well it'll wrap around something. But we'll see, right?

    3. Oh, I just saw this!
There's no "wrapping around" because my hair is super long and that just would not do. You put your hair in a ponytail and then pull that through the middle of "donut." You pull that to the end of the ponytail, so that there's only a little hanging out, and then you sort of push the donut inside-out. This catches the hair up in the bun. Keep pushing it inside out until it's up against your head, then pin it securely.
I put the scarves right over that.

  2. I often use a volumizer and I really like it. I also use a velvet headband and therefore no slipping! I find that the volumizer really helps me shape the "bun" part of my wrap... even when my hair was down to my waist! However, it really does depend on what style you are aiming for. I have made volumizers out of other scarves, socks (as above), and loofas... but I do find that the real deal is much easier and I can rationalize the price since I wear it so much!

    1. Selina,
Sadly, the Pesky Settler photographed that in Israel, so I really don't know quite where it was, as I live in NY. I know that plain volumizers are available at a number of the online tichel shops. Otherwise, I'm not really sure what to tell you.

  5. I have very very short hair (due to trichotillomania) and have wanted to start wearing tichel but have hesitated because I don't want people thinking I have cancer. I think this DIY volumizer might solve my issues! Thank you!
